Julie Bishop: a woman in power

  • Duration: 30 minutes

  • Released: 12 February, 2019

She's Australia's first female foreign minister, but how well do you know Julie Bishop?

Growing up, Julie’s mum brought her up to believe she could do anything. Julie took that from the apple and cherry orchard where she grew up and ran with it. While her mum didn’t have the opportunity to go to university, Julie did.

She became a lawyer and was elected to the Parliament of Australia in 1998. Julie became a minister and then Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party, the first woman to hold the position.

Fiercely loyal, Julie watched as one man after another took the top job. She had a tilt at the leadership. But the Liberal Party’s glass ceiling remains intact. After the spill, Julie resigned from Cabinet, wearing red heels to mark the occasion.

She had us asking, 'What’s next?' Would she eventually get her cake with a cherry on top and become Prime Minister? Or did she have other ambitions? This episode was released only a week before Julie Bishop resigned from Parliament. As Julie says, she still has dreams.

Let’s have a good chat with Julie Bishop, a woman to inspire my daughter.

  • Duration: 32 minutes

If you have a pair of Converse sneakers, it's time to put them on. Why? I’ll tell you in a moment. But first, have you heard of the bloke Vasily Petrenko?

He’s a Russian conductor who sparked controversy when he said orchestras respond better to male conductors because men can focus on the music, instead of other things... if you know what I mean.

jessica-gethin-conducting.jpg

He didn’t stop there. He also claimed when female conductors have families it’s difficult for them to be as dedicated as they need to be. Wow! Before you ask, he does have a daughter.

With attitudes like these, it’d take a strong woman to make it as a conductor. We’re about to meet one. Jessica Gethin is the chief conductor at Perth Symphony Orchestra. The mother-of-two is daring to be different, even wearing Converse sneakers on the podium.

Let’s have a good chat with Jessica Gethin, a woman to inspire my daughter.
